11 Hidden Google Chrome Flag Features For Better Browsing

The less known areas of Google Chrome browser is Chrome Flags, where you will find a database of experimental features that can boost your browser in new ways that you wouldn’t have thought possible. Here are 11 best Google Chrome features that you can enable in Chrome Flags.

Access Chrome Flags

Before you use any of these Chrome flags, first you need to know how to access them. Type chrome://flags and hit Enter. You will see a list of all experimental flags with a warning that these features are not stable. They may change, break or disappear at any time. But these flags benefit users in many ways.

Finding Each Chrome Flag Feature

Since the Chrome Flag features list is very big, it is better to use Chrome’s built-in Find feature (press Ctrl + F) to find the exact Chrome Flag that you want to change.

1. Show Page Titles In Address Bar Suggestions

When you type things in address bar you will see a list of suggestions display URL and page title in the same line. If you don’t mind making a change to this single line suggestions into two line suggestions then you should enable Omnibox UI Vertical Layout flag. After enabling the feature the address bar suggestions are displayed over two lines, the page title and URL, which makes it clearer when you make a selection.

2. Quickly Mute Audio On Tabs

You will see audio icon on the tab whenever a media is played in that tab. To mute it you can right click the tab and select Mute Tab. But the fastest way to do that is by a click on the audio icon on the tab. This can be achieved by enabling Tab audio muting UI control flag.

3. Enable Quick Window/Tab Close

When this flag is enabled, tabs and windows close instantly without any delay when you click close button. The closing process is done in the background. This definitely speeds up your browsing experience.

To enable this feature search for Fast tab/window close or type chrome://flags/#enable-fast-unload to directly access it. Click the Enable button below it.

4. Warnings For Sensitive Fields When Not On HTTPS Protocol

This feature is very beneficial to all users who are using Chrome browser. Chrome will flag pages with no HTTPS protocol for pages with sensitive fields such as password, credit card, etc.,.

To enable this, search for the Show in-form warnings for sensitive fields when the top-level page is not HTTPS option and select Enabled from the drop-down menu.

5. Show Last Used Date Of Credit Card in Autofill

This feature is useful especially for online shoppers who use credit card for transactions. It can prove to be of utmost important feature for every one. During any online transaction Chrome can show you last used date of your credit card in autofill.

To activate this feature, search for the Display the last used date of a credit card in autofill option and select Enabled from the drop-down menu.

6. Pause Background Tabs To Increase Performance Of Active Tab

Chrome offers to increase the performance of active tab by pausing other tabs after a span of five minutes. To enable this, search for the Pause background tabs option and select Enabled from the drop-down menu.

7. Auto Reload Visible Tabs

When all your tab reload all at the same time it can be big drain in resources and can even cause your browser to crash. To prevent this Chrome has flag called Only Auto Reload Visible Tabs. Just enable it and you will allow it to save precious resources and offer a much better browser performance.

8. Discard Tabs When System Memory Is Low

If this feature is enabled, tabs get discarded automatically from memory when the system memory is low. Discarded tabs are still visible in the browser and get reloaded when you visit that tab. To enable this feature, search for the Automatic tab discarding option and select Enabled from the drop-down menu.

9. Enable HDR Support

HDR stands for high dynamic range, offers high quality images and videos on your browser. You can find 4k videos on many different online platforms, with this feature enabled 4k videos are delight to watch. To enable this, search for HDR Mode from the list and select Enabled.

10. Enable Password Generation

With this feature enabled chrome will generate a strong password for you when you are on a signup page. This is a handy feature to generate strong passwords without any need of third party tools. Find the Password Generation option, select Enabled from the drop-down menu and the browser will ask you to relaunch it.

11. Enable Smooth Scrolling

Although I’ve listed most of Chrome Flags, I do not recommend you to mess up with all the other flags that are not mentioned here unless you know what you are doing. As it may prevent you from browsing normally and may even lead to data loss. So be very careful only enable what we have mentioned above.
